Junee, a rural town located in the Riverina region of NSW, may not seem like your typical surfing hot spot, however when it comes to the Internet, the Junee Shire Library is definitely making waves! In late 2009, the Library implemented an Endian Unified Threat Management (UTM) system that allowed it to create a safe, secure, wireless network that could be accessed both on the Library’s computer system and users’ personal laptops, tablet computers or handheld devices. Library Manager, Kim Richards, said the Endian UTM system meets the diverse access and security needs of the Library and extends their IT services without relying on budget increases. “When the Library relocated to a new facility in 2009, we wanted to implement IT systems that complemented the modern building and would allow us to grow our IT services over time,” she said. “The Endian UTM was an affordable option that provided a huge range of features in the one device. We needed a secure system that would allow public Internet access via a wireless network, but also include options to restrict usage times. The Endian UTM does all this and more!” “Another great feature is the VPN component that allows staff to access our document management system over a secure channel regardless of where they are in the world. It also allows IT support to access our system and provide live help 24/7.” “We have been extremely pleased with the uptake of our wireless hotspot amongst Library users and have noticed significant increases in people coming to the Library for this purpose. After two years, we are still extremely happy with the Endian system, its ease of use and adaptability to grow with the needs of the Library and its users,” she said. The Endian UTM also incorporates a firewall, email security, web security, gateway antivirus and anti-spam and intrusion detection, with businesses and organisations able to customise the features based on their needs. Veritech Corporation’s Senior Engineer, Mr Michael Sartor, said the UTM is a perfect system for community facilities such as Libraries as it is flexible, affordable and easy to use. “Businesses and organisations are becoming more aware of the benefits of providing free Wi-Fi access for their customers and clients – in some industries it is now almost expected,” Mr Sartor said. “What makes Endian a great system for this type of access is its ability to be customised based on the broad range of needs of the provider and the user. Without having to be an IT expert, business owners can easily determine the level of control they want to place on their network through features such as content filtering, password protection, time restrictions and blacklisting and whitelisting capabilities. This gives the owners and their clients’ peace of mind that the network is secure and is not being used inappropriately.” “The additional security features of the device mean that businesses do not need to have a separate firewall. Even your anti-virus, anti-spam and malware checking is done by the Endian before the threats get into your network. The UTM is an all-in-one system that has low ongoing ownership costs and provides an extra layer of security which is a must for public access networks,” he said.
